Abstract

This Dissertation goes into detail about the comparisons of fictional satire and real world politics by examining the Armando Iannucci’s The Thick of It with representations of modern contemporary politics portrayed in real factual media, by looking into examples both past and present, This will draw on examples of Spin, Political Scandal and Lying in both fictional and factual representations, using theories involving political representation and scandal, to see how ‘factual’ the fictional satire is when compared with the ongoings of political media in real life, it will use a variety of theories exploring the inspirations of The Thick of It, some contributed to Iannucci other work in journalism, theories on satire and political from a range of theorists and looking into both the real representations of modern media coverage of political scandals in the modern day to compare with how they were done within The Thick of It and what it paints a image of in terms of modern political society and the wider world of British Politics, drawing points shown within both real and fictional representations of political coverage and media influence over democratic governments , and looking into the scandals of Partygate, The Leveson Inquiry, Windrush and the New Labour scandals which inspired the programme in the first place.
