Abstract

This dissertation explores the intricate and contentious political environment in the United States, best exemplified by the turbulent Trump administration and the Capitol invasion in 2021. It carefully investigates the complex interactions that exist between social media, traditional media, and the formation of political discourse. Often referred to as the ‘Twitter President,’ Trump’s presidency heralds the dawn of a new political era marked by his extraordinary and provocative use of social media, which finally led to his ban from Twitter. This occurrence demonstrates how political communication is changing in the Internet era. The dissertation’s recurrent themes centre on the so-called ‘culture wars,’ which shed light on the ideological conflicts that exist between various political factions groups, most notably Democrats and Republicans. Furthermore, the research carefully analyses the progressive and regressive components included in different legislative actions and political policies, examining the consequences for topics like gender equality, reproductive rights, and other social justice issues. Trump’s presidency posed significant challenges to marginalised and minority groups, initially threatening Latinx communities and subsequently LGBTQ+ individuals, raising profound questions about democracy and civil rights in America. The dissertation also critically studies changes to the political structure that could weaken constitutional checks and balances by consolidating power. Overall, it offers a thorough examination of the complex effects of conservatism, populism, and the ongoing culture wars on the structure of American society.
