Abstract

This dissertation examines the different experiences black and white women had in the second wave feminist movement in America. Broadly, it has been understood that different feminist organisations and literature was developed due to the racism black women experienced within the movement. This dissertation will examine these differences through the analysis of intersectionality and historic segregation, with in depth analysis of the different consciousness raising tactics employed and the principles and methods used in different feminist organisations. Most notably it will examine Ms. magazine, Betty Frieden’s The Feminine Mystique, and the National Organisation for Women and compare these to black feminist literature and organisations. Both due to the racism within the feminist movement by white feminists, and the complications of black women’s commitment to the Civil Rights Movement and the feminist movement, black and white women were unable to collaborate in fighting against gendered oppression. The reason why black and white women had different experiences was because of institutionalised racism within the feminist movement which second wave white feminists failed to recognise and rectify, and ultimately caused the need for black feminists to develop their own theory and organisations.
