Purchase, Aidan (2024) What features make a VR/XR menu/UI appealing?. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

UX design is a concept that allows developers to get the most engagement from their users. When it comes to games, specifically the design of menus and general parts of the game they have to be designed in a way that the players can both understand and use. There is ongoing research at all times to try to keep up with the ever changing player base and needs/wants of the users. VR can have very similar requirements when it comes to design but parts of it like cluttering need to be managed a lot more aggressively than for normal UI. A large amount of primary research has been done to understand this field and to see what features are the most important. Other examples of good and bad reviewed UIs have been used as a baseline to help explain what is being discussed. This study should create a better known middle ground for anyone interested in VR design or just general UX as a whole. There are things discussed in the conclusion section that show the potential direction of this project and any future related work that could be taking place. Some sections may broaden the area of research and information from the initial title as parts tend to be applicable to multiple aspects and general UX design.
