Johns, egan Rosina (2024) Shifting the spotlight: a perspective on the game cesign process beyond the ego. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

In the last two decades, there has been an increase in the use of Player-Centric Design in game development, prioritising player experience and commercial success. However, this focus has neglected alternate design techniques and their potential in obtaining innovation and paving the way for future game development. This study addresses the lack of critique of Player-Centred Design and advocates for a shift in focus from the player, primarily the player ego. Introducing Ego-Decentred Design as a new framework, this study proposes a redirection of focus to challenge traditional design methodologies. Through an integrative literature review and practice-based research, ego elements in games are identified, analysed, and subverted through this new framework. The development of the game concept ‘Life Without’ illustrates the feasibility and potential of Ego-Decentred Game Design.
