Burobey, Adjoa (2024) Web design process to promote the theme of. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
The proposed research applied existing research to explore how the role of a website may contribute to the ongoing efforts to bridge the gender gap and inspire women in the UK’s technology sector. It is said that website design encouraged females to pursue a career in technology. The website design process was therefore explored to see whether a website contributes to bridging the gender gap. Mixed-methods data analysis was used in surveys targeting female academics and technicians from the University of Portsmouth and the public. To explore the question, indicate and rate their overall User Experience of the study’s website.
Findings were participants believed the website could bridge the gender gap. With the majority indicating it could inspire women in the sector. However, advice was the website should be promoted effectively, trademarked and the domain purchased to increase its reach nationally. Recommended improvements included changing the colour scheme and typography etc.
The research was subject to several limitations which may have affected its outcome. Including limited information on websites promoting gender gap awareness. The survey only involved women, restricting viewpoints. Time-management of an academic project prevented other effective data collection methods, like focus groups, from being used. Overall, the study’s findings convey improvements would be required for its website to reach and impact women in the UK’s technology sector
