Berry, Jake (2024) Creating fun using RPS in fighting games. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

Can I define and create a specific type of fun through the creation of a fighting game that focuses on one specific interaction within the genre. The type of fun I'm looking to create is based around competition between players, prediction, mind games, and a lack of dominant strategy, so as to not let the players get bored. I will hopefully achieve this by creating a fighting game based around RPS (Rock Paper Scissors), an old and proven fighting game formula (“Ask any competitive player about the Game Theory of fighting games and they’ll tell you that the genre essentially boils down to Rock, Paper, Scissors.”[1]). In most fighting games, this is usually supplemented by other mechanics, however in this case, the challenge is to create fun through a single aspect of the genre.
