Getting started: completing your student card registration

It is very important that you complete your student card registration, including uploading a photograph of yourself, even if you know you will never visit the University Library in person.  You must complete all stages of registering for your student card before our computer system will create your library account, which you need to join the SCONUL Access scheme and visit/borrow from other libraries, request interlibrary loans, and request library books be posted to you if you are registered as a distance learner.

In addition, your student card:

  • allows you to enter the library and borrow books should you ever visit Portsmouth
  • may be accepted as proof of identification by other libraries worldwide
  • is needed as proof of identity for anyone who is UK-based and wants to use other academic libraries through the SCONUL Access scheme
  • is accepted as proof of eligibility for student discounts by some retailers

You need never visit the library or pick up your card.  If you never visit the library, your card will be printed, held securely until you graduate, and then destroyed.

Who is it for?

Everyone, including distance learners who never intend to visit the University Library, needs to complete the registration process and apply for a library card and must upload a photograph of themselves.
