Preparation is key to making the most of your time in the Library. Check the Library's current opening times on our website and contact the Map Librarian or Archivist in advance if you want to make use of their services to ensure their availability. Make sure you bring with you all the required evidence stated on the Library website to access services you need, particularly if you are an External Visitor wanting to register for Library Walk-in Access or SCONUL Access.
If you are an external visitor
Please be aware that there are no computing facilities other than Walk-in Access for external visitors and that everything you want to take away must be downloaded onto your own USB stick, since you will have no internet access. Similarly, external readers will need to look for printed books in the Library catalogue because ebooks are only available to current staff and students. Searching reading lists on the Library website for a topic will show you lists of books recommended for students by subject experts, while the Portsmouth Research Portal showcases all the open access research outputs of the University.
Online guidance, help and support
Library guides and helpful advice integrated with the main Library website, including our 24/7 online chat service, are all available for you to use at any time. Library social media feeds and the Library blog are full of useful tips and news and are available through the Library homepage.
On the Library website, the Find your books service (found in the Using the Library menu) is the best way to locate subject areas, while catalogue records include a "Find on shelf" link that displays a shelf location for each book you search for. This works well on your mobile phone, providing you with a guide to the location of a book that you can carry with you as you navigate the Library. Remember that you can always get instant help through your mobile by using our online chat service, including finding books!
