Special Collections
1 of 5

The Library has some special collections which are locked away to keep them safe for you to access when you need to.

They include the Rare Books Collection which includes some beautifully illustrated art, design and architecture books as well as some interesting local history books.

There are more architecture-related rare books in the Bolton Collection.  Arthur T. Bolton (1864-1945) was a renowned architect and architectural historian who donated his books to the University.

One of the more popular collections is the Glass Cupboard which includes a large collection of pop-up books and other publications which have unusual bindings or are loose-leaf and not really suited to the main shelves!

Facsimiles of four illustrated poems by William Blake from his "Songs of Innocence" (1789).

Where and when?

Just ask a member of library staff if you would like to look at any of the items in these collections. So that means that they are only available when library staff are in the building. Refer to our Welcome Desk opening hours to see when that is.
