Sometimes you may want to try specific databases or journals – perhaps your lecturer has recommended particular names as a good way of finding articles. This page lists key sources for Sports Science:

Medline is a biomedical database containing references and abstracts to the international biomedical literature. Medline’ major subject areas include nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, allied health, and pre-clinical sciences. Medline also covers life sciences, including some aspects of biology, environmental science, marine biology, plant and animal science as well as biophysics and chemistry.

PsycINFO is a bibliographic database covering the research literature in the psychological, social, behavioural, and health sciences. It includes material of relevance to psychologists and professionals in related fields such as psychiatry, management, business, education, social science, neuroscience, law, medicine, and social work

• PubMed not in Discovery 

PubMed comprises millions of citations for biomedical literature from MEDLINE, life science journals and online books. Citations may include links to full-text content from PubMed Central and publisher websites

ScienceDirect's extensive and unique full text database covers authoritative titles from the core scientific literature, published by Elsevier. More than 2,500 journals and more than nine million full-text articles are available in ScienceDirect providing access to the physical sciences and engineering life sciences. This resource is also available through the Discovery service. A Library Guide is available.

• Scopus 

Scopus is the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature: scientific journals, books and conference proceedings. Delivering a comprehensive overview of the world's research output in the fields of science, technology, medicine, social sciences, and arts and humanities. Scopus features smart tools to track, analyze and visualize research.

SPORTDiscus is a bibliographic database covering all aspects of sport and sport development. . This database is available on the EBSCO platform allowing you to search this database alongside others within Discovery.

Web of Science – part of the Web of Knowledge collection of databases – consists of a number of databases containing information gathered from thousands of scholarly journals, books, book series, reports and conferences. Three citation databases (Science Citation Index Expanded (1970-), Social Sciences Citation Index and Arts (1975-) and Humanities Citation Index (1975-)) also contain the references cited by the authors of the articles. You can use these references to do cited reference searching, allowing you to find articles that cite a previously published work. Conference Proceedings Citation Index – Science includes the published literature of the most significant conferences, symposia, seminars, colloquia, workshops, and conventions in a wide range of scientific disciplines.


• ZETOC not in Discovery 

Zetoc is a database of the tables of contents from journals held by the British Library. It has a search function or you can select any journal held by the BL and have the table of contents emailed to you as soon as a new issue is published.


This journal is an official journal of the Psychonomic Society. It presents research on sensory processes, perception, attention and psychophysics.  Most articles published are reports of experiment work, the journal also contains theoretical, integrative, and evaluative reviews. The British Journal of Psychology publishes original research on all aspects of general psychology including cognition; health and clinical psychology; developmental, social and occupational psychology. Print also available

The British Journal of Sports Medicine is a multi-media information portal that provides original research, reviews and debate relating to clinically-relevant aspects of sport and exercise medicine.

Human Movement Science contains articles covering psychological, neurophysiological and biomechanical/biophysical research on human movement

The official journal of the International Society of Sport Psychology publishing empirical and theoretical contributions in the science of physical activity, human movement, exercise and sport.  The journal aims to promote understanding of sport psychology research and practice around the world.  Sections in the journal are devoted to areas including group dynamics, moral and ethical issues, social aspects in sport and exercise, and biological aspects of behaviour.

The International Journal of Sports Science and Coaching is a peer-reviewed, international, academic/professional journal, which aims to bridge the gap between coaching and sports science.  It publishes original papers representing a variety of qualitative and quantitative research methods plus case studies of work between sports scientists and coaches.

The Journal of Applied Physiology is published by the American Physiological Society. It contains original papers that deal with diverse areas of research in applied physiology, especially those papers emphasizing adaptive and integrative mechanisms.  On campus use only – print also available.

The primary focus of The Journal of Experimental Psychology: Applied is on original experimental investigations conducted in laboratory or field settings.  Of major interest are investigations that bridge practical problems and psychological theory

The Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance publishes observations, reports and commentary articles on perception control of action and related cognitive processes. Print also available

This is a multidisciplinary journal of movement neuroscience.  It published articles from a variety of perspectives including  neurophysiological, biomechanical, electrophysiological, psychological, mathematical and physical, and clinical approaches

Covering all areas of physiology the journal of Physiology is a journal of the Physiological Society.  It contains full length research papers and shorter reports of particularly important cutting edge work.  It also contains pieces on new techniques for physiological research plus symposium reports and topical reviews. Collections of articles on a particular theme are also occasionally published as virtual issues.

An official publication of the North American Society for the Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity (NASPSPA) this journal publishes research articles exploring the interactions between psychology and exercise and sport performance. On campus use only (electronic) – print also available

The Journal of Sport Behavior publishes original, empirical, investigative and theoretical papers dealing with the studies of behaviour in the areas of game and sport.  It is multidisciplinary covering sociology, psychology and anthropology and related applications to the science of sport.  Available in print only.

The official journal of the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP).  The Journal of Sport Psychology in Action is to provide information to sport psychology practitioners to better understand, assess, and intervene with clients (individuals, families, groups, organizations, community) in order to promote more effective functioning. It covers issues such as performance enhancement, health and well-being, clinical disorders, ethical guidelines and dilemmas, all forms of diversity, coaching and support

The Journal of Sports Sciences is a journal of the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences.  It covers a number of disciplinary bases including anatomy, biochemistry, biomechanics, psychology, sociology and ergonomics. The emphasis of the journal is on the human sciences applied to sport and exercise.  Besides experimental work in human responses to exercise the subjects covered include human responses to technologies such as the design of sports equipment and playing facilities, research in training, selection, performance prediction or modification, and stress reduction or manifestation.

Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise is the flagship journal of the American College of Sports Medicine. It features original investigations, clinical studies, and comprehensive reviews on current topics in sports medicine and exercise science.  Featured topics include sports medicine practice, physiology, epidemiology, biodynamics and physical fitness and performance.  Available in print only.

• Perception 

Perception includes articles reporting on experimental results and theoretical ideas across all fields of human, animal, and machine perception. On campus use only (electronic) – print also available

Physical Therapy in Sport is the official journal of the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Sports and Exercise Medicine.  It covers topics dealing with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of injuries, as well as more general areas of sports medicine and related sports science. The journal publishes original research, case studies, reviews, masterclasses, papers on clinical approaches, and book reviews as well as occasional reports from conferences.


PLOS ONE is an international, peer-reviewed, open-access, online publication presenting reports on primary research from all scientific disciplines

An official journal of the European Federation of Sport Psychology presenting research reports and reviews

Representing the Scandinavian sports medicine and science associations, the journal publishes original articles on the traumatologic (orthopaedic), physiologic, biomechanic, medical (including rehabilitation), sociologic, psychologic, pedagogic, historic and philosophic aspects of sport

Designed for educational and clinical psychologists, The Sport Psychologist  focuses on applied research and its application in providing psychological services to coaches and athletes. On campus use only (electronic) – print also available

Sports Medicine bridges the gap between science and practice in the promotion of exercise and health, and in the scientific assessment, study and understanding of sports performance. Regular features include: sports injury prevention and treatment; exercise for health; drugs in sport and recommendations for training and nutrition. The journal aims to be areference source for physicians, sports medicine specialists, physiotherapists, exercise physiologists, team doctors and trainers.
