It is often held that History is written by the victors.  History with a capital 'H' is.  What we are taught all on mother's knee, in school, through the media, and absorb from our culture, is a highly selective collection of events held to be significant, joined together with a story that establishes why the rich and powerful should retain their wealth and power.  Women, Black, Disabled and Queer peoples are all somehow forgotten - erased from the tapestry of History like so many figures from a Soviet Era photograph of Stalin with his former friends.

Anyone seeking a broader perspective could therefore benefit from listening to the voices of the excluded - the marginalised and silenced, those 'unimportant' to those who write History.

Finding such sources can be challenging, which is why the Library has drawn together databases, websites, and themed reading lists that compile books, videos, and more by and about communities as diverse as Gypsies, Roma and Travellers, LGBTQ+ people, and the many diverse Peoples of the Global Majority.
