Stories are how we make sense of who we are. Stories carry meaning and lessons down through generations, and the translation of stories from around the globe helps us all embrace more diverse stories, voices, and perspectives, and broaden our perspectives and horizons. Stories carry meaning and lessons down through generations, and the translation of stories helps us draw on a wider breadth of traditions and cultures to gain a deeper understanding of the world and appreciate the different perspectives others bring.
At the University of Portsmouth, we’re proud to celebrate South Asian Heritage Month—a time to honour the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of South Asian communities across the UK and beyond. This year, we’re shining a spotlight on the power of storytelling, especially through the vibrant world of children’s literature.
This South Asian Heritage Month has the theme of "Roots to Routes". It celebrates the unique story each of us has shaped by our roots and the routes travelled to get to where we are. This year, the invitation is to reflect on your journey, whether from ancestral origins to the paths you’ve taken, or something much more recent, and how these experiences shape your identity today.
Come explore our celebrated South Asian authors' bilingual and translated children's books in Outside In World collection near the Library Café.
Members of the public are welcome to visit with their children and borrow books from the collection. Please apply online for an external library membership.
