Black History Month isn’t just about looking back - it’s also a moment to step forward. And what better way to do that than by coming together this Friday, 17 October 2025 and wearing red in solidarity? We’re joining the national Wear Red Day, led by Show Racism the Red Card - and you’re invited!
Racism is not some distant problem - it’s happening here, now, even on our doorstep. In Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, race continues to be the biggest reported category of hate crimes. We believe inclusion, respect, and equality aren’t just buzzwords - they’re values that guide everything we do. When we wear red, we make a visible, collective statement that we reject racism in all its forms.
While red is our Friday spotlight, there’s loads more going on across campus to make October more meaningful. Still coming up:
Nollywood Comedy Film Night @ Sparks (Wednesday 15 October) — a relaxed evening, films + free refreshments + good vibes.
Celebrating Black British heroes (Wednesday 15 October) - a webinar exploring how you can re-experience Black History through primary historical sources. Book your place here!
Soulful Celebration at The Union (Friday 18 October) — dance, gospel choir, Afro-fusion performances - a joyful closing highlight.
Wear red — it could be a top, socks, a scarf, a pin… whatever red makes you happy.
Snap & share — rally your flatmates, classmates or society friends. Post your red squad pic using #WRD25UoP and the national #WRD25.
Grab photo props — we’ll have red cards, stickers, maybe signs for your shots. Pop by the Library Reception Desk (or University House Reception) while stocks last!
Reflect & chat — use the day as a springboard. Share anti-racism reads and memes, chat about the impact of discrimination and division with your coursemates, or just check in with someone about what inclusivity means to them.
