New members of staff should obtain a staff card on joining the University. You can visit the University Library to have your card produced once you receive an email from HR informing you that you can log in to Employee Self Service (ESS).
Your staff card must be brought with you every time you use the Library, as this identifies you as a valid library user and allows you to gain access to the Library through our entry turnstiles. Your staff card is not transferable and you will be held responsible for all items borrowed on it.
If you forget your staff card, you can use our temporary card kiosk to obtain a 24 hour temporary pass. This temporary pass gives you access to the Library turnstiles only: it does not give you access to any of the Library or IT services that require your staff card (for example, you will not be able to borrow books without your card). You can apply for up to 12 temporary passes each Academic Year (August – July each year).
Alternatively, you can download the Juno Buddy app which enables you to install a barcode on your phone which can be used to scan into the library turnstiles instead of using a university card. They are separate from temporary passes in that if you obtain a temporary pass, you will not be able to use your card or the app for 24 hours, or until the temporary pass is cancelled. The app cannot be used with the kiosks, the printers, laptop lockers, or teaching room card scanners. The Juno Buddy app is available from the App Store or Google Play. You will need to register with the code PORTJB. Enter your University email to receive a PIN to use the first time.
If you lose your staff card, you will need to obtain a replacement card. A replacement card generates a new issue number and a new Library number. The new Library number is usually imported overnight, however library staff can manually update this to enable you to access the library and borrow books.
