Support for Researchers: Searching for information

  • Use this for quick general searches, noting the below:

    1. Think about your keywords, where you want to search and how you will filter your results. The Peer-Reviewed Articles option returns the most academic content. 
    2. Watch: Using the EBSCO Discovery Service video (7 mins) plus additional guidance for EBSCO login screens
  • Library catalogue
    (Searchable in EBSCO Discovery)

    The Library Catalogue contains details of books, journals, DVDs and other materials held by the library in physical form as well as many resources available electronically (eg. e-books and databases).

    A 'search term' may be all or part of a title, author, publisher or simply subject keywords.

  • A variant of Google that searches for academic literature. Provides access to articles, books, conference papers and preprints. Links to Full-text @ Portsmouth on campus or when using the VPN.

  • Part of Web of Knowledge, includes records for thousands of scholarly publications. Search across three main citation databases (Science/Social Science/Arts & Humanities). Defaults to Smart Search - for advanced features click on Advanced Search instead. 

  • Large abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature covering all subject areas.

  • A database of digitised UK doctoral theses offering free online access to theses of participating Higher Education institutions.

  • Access books and videos about quantitative and qualitative research methods and many more social science research topics. Use the Tools drop-down at the top centre of the screen to access a handy Project Planner which is full of FAQs about what you need to consider at each stage in a project/dissertation. Tools also contains a Methods Map which is ideal for quickly finding details about a particular research method.

  • The Directory of Open Access Journals covers free, full text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals, covering all subjects and languages

  • A community-driven discovery service that indexes and provides access to scholarly, peer-reviewed open access books and helps users to find trusted open access book publishers.

  • Browse through thousands of registered repositories based on a range of features.

  • A gateway to thousands of the UK's richest archives held in over 220 institutions across the country. The Archives Hub helps you discover unique and often little-known sources to support your research.

 

Support for Researchers Pages (Department of Research and Innovation)

The Support for Researchers information pages (Open Access, Open Research, and Research Data Management material) are now hosted on the Department of Research and Innovation (DRI) intranet pages.

As the DRI intranet pages are currently hosted on a  limited-access UoP Google Site, you will need to log in with your UoP Google account.
