Griffiths, Oliver (2023) Racism in association football: a social and historical analysis. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

This dissertation focuses on racism in football and provides both a social and historical analysis of its presence within the sport. It explores the roots, causes, and effects of racism in the game. The study discovers through secondary analysis that racism is an ongoing issue in modern society and is not exclusive to football. It explores the long history of Black players' exclusion from the game as well as the continuance of prejudiced behaviours such institutional racism, unconscious bias, and stereotyping. The study contends that racism in football is a reflection of larger societal and cultural problems, such as racial inequality and far-right extremism, and it emphasises the psychological and emotional costs of suffering or witnessing racist abuse.

This dissertation uses secondary analysis as its technique, drawing from a variety of academic publications, news articles, and historical records. The study integrates existing knowledge to offer a thorough examination of racism in football, emphasising the need for a quick response to the issue. Overall, this dissertation advances knowledge of racism in football and advocates for tougher anti-discrimination laws, campaigns to educate and raise public awareness, and improved systems for reporting and penalising racist behaviour. It highlights how football has the ability to advance social justice and inclusivity, but it also makes clear that this is only possible if racism is abolished in the game.
