Kanopy - stream Black History Month video and more, free and ad-free

Explore our curated UK Black History Month streamed video collection this October, featuring such highlights as Getting it Back: The Story of Cymande - the story of the greatest band you've likely never heard of. Featuring archival footage and interview with the original band members filmed over two years, this documentary tells the story of a group of Caribbean musicians arriving in London Formed in south London by musicians as part of the Windrush generation. Led by Patrick Patterson (guitar) and Steve Scipio (bass), they combined jazz, funk, soul and Caribbean grooves to create a new sound, Cymande found success in the US with their first three albums but disbanded after facing years of prejudice-fuelled indifference in the U, finally disbanding in 1975. Over the years since, their music lived on and influenced generations of artists on both sides of the Atlantic as their pioneering sounds were sampled, reworked and developed for new audiences.
