Show racism the red card (2026)

On Friday 16 October, staff across the University will be wearing red as part of Wear Red Day 2026, a national day of action led by Show Racism the Red Card. Just by wearing something red, you too can join thousands across the UK sending a clear and visible message that racism has no place in our community or University.

Timed to coincide with Black History Month, Wear Red Day offers an opportunity to turn reflection into peaceful yet effective action, signalling our commitment to fostering an inclusive environment where everyone feels they can express their true selves and still belong.  Standing against racism is a central pillar of that commitment and a shared responsibility, and the simple act of wearing red signals our opposition to racism, hate, and division and reminds us that the world we live in is shaped by the little everyday choices we make all the time.  Inviting in different experiences, welcoming others, valuing different perspectives, and calling out injustice and discrimination are ways we can all contribute.

Take part and show your support

There are various ways you can take part and show your support:

  • Wear something (anything) red on Friday 16 October

  • Pick up a sticker from any of the staffed Library desks on the day – particularly if you don’t own anything red to wear!

  • Share a selfie with your friends or team, all wearing red, to show your support

  • Start a conversation about what inclusion means in your area of study

It is only together, as a whole University community, that we can realise a space where everyone feels welcome, valued, and included.
