Journal Databases

Find journal and magazine articles. These include up-to-date publications. 

Follow the link to access the Digital Edition of the AJ (2015 to date) by registering for an account on the AJ website. You must use your UoP email address. Access is for 1 academic year. Once you have registered, select My AJ, then Digital Editions. For print editions, view the library catalogue or for alternative digital editions and to search the contents view the E-journals page.

Use this resource to search for journal articles, e-books and images.  All visual arts subjects are included.  Links to the full text are provided, where available.

Full text for more than 190 journals and records for numerous other journal titles going back as far as 1888. This database is available on the EBSCO platform allowing you to search this database alongside others within Discovery.

• Geobase not in Discovery 

GeoBase is a multidisciplinary database of bibliographic information and abstracts that indexes journal literature across the earth sciences including geology, human and physical geography, environmental sciences, oceanography and geomechanics from 1980-present. • Greenfile 

GreenFILE covers research information on all aspects of human impact to the environment. Its collection of scholarly, government and general-interest titles includes content on the environmental effects of individuals, corporations and local/national governments, and what can be done at each level to minimize these effects. This is a multidisciplinary resource and topics include global climate change, green building, pollution, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, recycling, and more. This resource is also available through the Discovery service.

• JSTOR 

An academic journal archive containing thousands of articles on a wide range of subjects. You will need to search other databases to find the most recent years.

Collections of articles from a variety of humanities and social sciences. We have bought the collection which includes Literature and Film. Not only an excellent for Literature students, it is useful for subjects as far ranging as Computer Games, Theatre and Music Technology.

ScienceDirect's extensive and unique full text database covers authoritative titles from the core scientific literature, published by Elsevier. More than 2,500 journals and more than nine million full-text articles are available in ScienceDirect providing access to the physical sciences and engineering life sciences. This resource is also available through the Discovery service. A Library Guide is available.

The AJ Buildings Library showcases thousands of architectural projects and includes full project data, architectural photographs and drawings (plans, elevation, section). There is also a large number of working details. Drawings can be downloaded and printed out to their original scale. NB Vector pdfs and CAD files are not available for download and all copyrighted images are protected. 

• Barbour not in Discovery 

Barbour is a health and safety information service providing information sourced from over 900 providers. Information within it includes legislation, technical guides and best practice along with director level briefings and employee training guides. The legislation diary identifies all known upcoming changes in legislation relating to different health and safety topics.

Current Newspapers

• Nexis not in Discovery 

Full text articles from many news sources and trade journals both UK and international. Archives sometimes stretching back to the mid 1980s.

Full text of regional and national UK and international newspapers from the 1980s onwards. Useful for reviews and public opinions.

• UKPressonline not in Discovery 

Access facsimile articles (including photos) from the Daily Express and Daily Mirror from the early 1900s onwards. Useful if you want the tabloid view on topical issues.

Newspaper Archives

• British Library Newspapers not in Discovery 

Search and read a wide range of national and regional newspapers from 1741-1950.

Use with care as this tabloid is known for its strong views but it can help with some assignments and certain dissertation topics. Search for stories or use the browse feature to flick through the paper on particular days, including special editions published in connection with Queen Victoria, George V, Elizabeth II's coronation and Winston Churchill. Use Nexis if you want to go beyond 2004.

• The Guardian and Observer Archives not in Discovery 

Access stories and photos from The Guardian (1821-2003) and The Observer (1791-2003). Use Nexis if you want to search up to the current day.

• The Times: Digital Archive 1785-2013 not in Discovery 

Search over 200 years of articles. Articles are full facsimiles of what was published on the day and you can view the article in its original page location if you want.

Image Collections

• Aerial Digimap not in Discovery 

Detailed aerial imagery.

• Artstor 

A database of more than 2 million images related to visual arts and culture. You can create, save and share groups of images and make presentations too.

Culture Grid provides access to UK arts, culture and heritage collections. You can also access European collections through Europeana. Results draw on image, audio and video artefacts.

Detail Inspiration is an image and reference database with more than 3000 projects from the last 30 years of DETAIL Magazine (UK and German editions and Detail Green). Each project is accompanied by DETAIL project documents, which can be downloaded as PDFs. This presentation explains a little more about the resource:

Includes, photographs and drawings of England's archaeology, historic buildings and social history.

• RIBA Pix 

Online image collections from the RIBA and, therefore, focus on architecture and interior design.  Images are watermarked, but they are of good quality and can be used for educational purposes.

Video Collections

This fantastic resource has captured UK terrestrial TV and radio programmes from 1998 onwards for anyone in UK universities to watch for free. You can create playlists and clips to embed in presentations, as well as putting in requests for recording. Look out for all the useful documentaries. (Not available to anyone outside the UK.)

• Kanopy 

A unique collections of films including award-winning documentaries, training films and theatrical releases on every topic imaginable. Content can be searched or browsed.
