The Educational Recording Agency (ERA)
The ERA licenses educational establishments to undertake copying of all scheduled free to air radio and television broadcasts for use for teaching purposes. All UK terrestrial broadcasts recorded after the 1st August 1989 are covered within the licence, including BBC (TV and radio), Channel 4, Channel 5, ITV, S4C and The Open University. On-demand services are also included, such as BBC iPlayer, All 4 and ITV Player. In addition, the licence allows further copying of programmes recorded under the licence and allows the compilation of extracts of material for teaching purposes.
Materials directly accessed from YouTube are not covered by the licence.
All recordings must be clearly labelled with the following:
- Date (when the recording was made)
- Name of the broadcaster
- Programme title
- The wording “This recording is to be used only for educational and non-commercial purposes under the terms of the ERA Licence”
