A postal loans service is available if you would like us to post books to you (UK addresses only). This service is for anyone with a University student or staff card.

Postal loans can be used for whole books held in the Library stock.

  • To request an item of stock to be posted to you, please find the item on the library
catalogue and select "Request for delivery" button.
  • This will take you to Hornbill, the University of Portsmouth’s Self Service portal. You will
need to login using SSO and enter your University Login and Password to proceed.
  • Remember your Library number is printed on you University Card – you will need that.
  • Once you have completed the request form you will receive email progress reports via your
    University email account.

Postal loans from the Library

Whether you are studying on campus or at a distance, you can still get access to all the Library's resources. We can post books to you free of charge to any UK address. You will need to sign for the delivery and be prepared to return the books if someone else requests them. If you live overseas, you can still access all our electronic resources online 24/7.

You must allow time for the items you request to be delivered to you. If you're working to a tight deadline, please contact your Faculty Librarian for advice on possible alternatives.

To ask us to post your book to you, find the item in the Library catalogue and click the ‘Request for delivery’ button in the catalogue record and complete the online form. You will be asked for your library number. This is different from your student number. You can find both printed on your university card.

If you need any help finding information, using our services and resources, getting hold of anything or referencing, please get in touch. You can chat with a librarian in person or online, and your subject page is a treasure trove of information with structured guidance on finding and using academic information.

Click on the link in the description or the blue question mark button on the Library website to get started. Our online chat service is available 24/7. Happy reading!

Please remember that using this service means you'll need to allow time for the return of items on loan and/or delivery of items. If you are working to a tight deadline, contact your Faculty Librarian or Subject Enquiry Team for advice on possible alternatives.

Our form of delivery requires a signature on receipt, so you may need to collect books if no-one is available to sign for them. We will however deliver to any address you nominate on your request form if your workplace, friend or relative is willing to sign on your behalf.

Books from stock are posted out to you free of charge on the understanding that you are responsible for their safe return and any associated postage costs. We recommend you return books by a trackable delivery service as this provides proof of postage and cover for any items lost in the post.

If you have any questions about this service please contact us.
