Outside in World Children's Books in Translation

An international port, Portsmouth is a vibrant waterfront city, its skyline dominated by the iconic Spinnaker Tower with views of the South Coast, the Isle of Wight and the city of Portsmouth. A diverse community continues to inhabit this Island city, home to the renowned historic dockyard, the famous Tudor warship, the Mary Rose, and Portsmouth City Football Club. A City of Sanctuary, welcoming and assisting migrants and a community focused University at its heart all help to give Portsmouth its distinctive character.

Portsmouth is easily accessible by road and rail, and the University is just a short walk from either Portsmouth Harbour or Portsmouth and Southsea railway stations. The University of Portsmouth Library is home to the prestigious Outside In World Children's Books in Translation, a collection of international books that have been translated from their original language into English.

We actively encourage the collection to be used to support research and teaching at the University of Portsmouth and in the wider academic world and for community outreach work. We also warmly welcome members of the community who simply want to use the collection for pleasure. The University Library is open to everyone. If you are not a member of the University and would like to visit the collection, please see our Library Membership webpages. You can apply for external membership which allows you to borrow two books at a time. Membership is free.

As you approach the entrance to the Library on Cambridge Road, peer through the floor to ceiling windows on your righthand side and you will see the collection and the Library Café just beyond. Items within the collection are included on the Library Catalogue, and most items are available for loan. They shelved in a separate sequence. The number which helps you to locate a specific book is proceeded with “Outside in World”.

Items which are not available for loan can be consulted in the Library on request. They are housed in the Glass Cupboard alongside the bookshelves. The collection can be browsed on the Outside in World website giving you a flavour of the books you can expect to find in this special collection within the University of Portsmouth Library.
