Dictionaries and encyclopedias

Useful for getting a basic understanding of your topic.

A variety of reference works, including dictionaries, which tutors may well prefer to Wikipedia, and it even tells you how to set out a reference to what you find. Try out the 'Mind Map' option to see how your keyword links to others - useful for essay planning and dissertation work (use the arrow next to Basic Search to get to it).

A virtual reference resource relating to all aspects of the visual arts.  It includes links to images and other useful features such as history of art timelines.

The most trusted source about words in English, containing definitions, plus very detailed word histories.

E-book collections

You can find ebooks on Discovery, but you can search the full text of the books by using the individual services. More services can be found on the Ebooks webpage.
