Everyone’s ideal study space looks and feels different. That is why the Library comprises a whole series of spaces that look and feel very different. From the collaborative study spaces near the Library Café, which have an energising noise from gentle background chatter to the mixture of computers and soft seating in the rest of the Library and the rows of formal desks with dividers to minimise distraction from others in the Individual Silent Zone, there is somewhere for you, however you would like to study today.

What kind of space would suit you right now?

I want to work on my own without distractions

Try our Independent Silent Study zone on the top floor of the library.  Look for the purple pull-up banners announcing the entrances to the space.  You can also ask for free, reusable, sound-cancelling earplugs from the temporary reception desk by the temporary library entrance.  If the distraction of people passing you is still too much, the individual silent study pods on the ground floor offer complete seclusion, ventilation and adjustable lighting for the ultimate solo study experience.

Exclusive study space for postgraduate research students

If you are a postgraduate research student, you might also like to try our Postgraduate Study Suite - exclusively available to our research students.  Please ask the Doctoral College for the entry code.

I want to work on my own but enjoy the buzz of background noise

If you enjoy a certain level of background noise as you work, you will find a variety of spaces throughout the Library to suit your needs.  Log onto a curved screen desktop computer on the ground floor, plug in your own device on the first floor, sit at any of the traditional tables or join others in a drop-in meeting pod for a quieter, more secluded study experience.

I want to study with my friends

The Library offers a wide variety of spaces for you to choose from.  You could sit together around a computer table on the ground floor, borrow a laptop or bring your own device and work together in one of our popular American diner booths, drop into a meeting pod and enjoy a quieter study experience where your conversations will be baffled from escaping into the outside world, luxuriate in our executive chairs on the far side of the ground floor overlooking Ravelin Park for a more relaxed experience, or simply crash in one of the soft seating areas on the first floor and chat in greater comfort.

I want to book a space to practice a group presentation

You can book a group study room in the library up to two weeks in advance if you want to practice a group presentation or just want to book a room exclusively for your group.  If you need a room and one has not yet been booked, you can just scan your card against the door control fob and let yourself in.  All our group study rooms come with either a plasma screen or projector so you can bring or borrow a laptop and practice your group presentations in private with no risk of disturbing anyone else.
