This is the Vancouver style for referencing, used at the Univerity of Portsmouth within the School of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences and the Radiography departments.

This guide is modelled on Citing Medicine: The NLM Style Guide for Authors, Editors, and Publishers (2nd edition). You may wish to consult this source directly for additional information or examples.

Includes company reports, Law Commission reports, publications from Government departments, briefing or working papers, and market research reports.

The format is very much like a book, with author, year, title, place of publication and publisher. However, if it comes from a recognised series, include the series title and number in round brackets after the title. Some types of report may have a corporate author (the name of the organization responsible for the report goes in the author position).

Scientific or Technical Reports

Some reports will have the same type of edition statement found in books, such as "2nd ed." However, most technical reports use such wording as "Annual Report," "Final Report" and "Interim Report" to express edition.

Remember this will be a running number at the first use of a reference. If the reference is re-used then repeat the number allocated.

Keep your style constant, either parenthesis (number) throughout, or superscript number. Do not change between the two. If your department recommends a particular style then use that.
