If you are unable to visit the library, you can use the postal loans service to request a book to be sent to you by post (UK addresses only).

You can also use the Document Delivery service to access a chapter or article from books which we hold in stock.

The Library does its utmost to provide a quality service for those students who are not based in Portsmouth. While some of our resources and facilities are local in nature, where applicable we highlight alternative options for Distance Learners.

Basic general information on accessing Library services and resources is covered on our accessing electronic resources page.

In this section, we offer additional services and advice specifically for Distance Learners:

You will find assistance for the most common problems in our Help with IT Issues section.

Distance learning support

Whether you are studying on campus or at a distance, you can still get access to all the Library's resources. We can post books to you free of charge to any UK address. You will need to sign for the delivery and be prepared to return the books if someone else requests them. If you live overseas, you can still access all our electronic resources online 24/7.

If you only need a scan of a chapter from a book or report or an article from a journal we only hold in printed copy, you can ask us to scan it and send you a PDF. You must allow time for the items you request to be delivered to you. If you're working to a tight deadline, please contact your Faculty Librarian for advice on possible alternatives.

To request a scan of a section, chapter or article, visit our ‘Document delivery and interlibrary loans’ page and follow the link to the interlibrary loan and document delivery form. You can use this same form to request books we do not hold in stock.

To ask us to post your book to you, find the item in the Library catalogue and click the ‘Request for delivery’ button in the catalogue record and complete the online form. You will be asked for your library number. This is different from your student number. You can find both printed on your university card.

If you need any help finding information, using our services and resources, getting hold of anything or referencing, please get in touch. You can chat with a librarian in person or online, and your subject page is a treasure trove of information with structured guidance on finding and using academic information.

Click on the link in the description or the blue question mark button on the Library website to get started. Our online chat service is available 24/7.  Happy reading!
