An increasing amount of our book stock is in the form of electronic books. You can search for ebooks listed in the Library Catalogue by clicking on the search button at the top right of this page then entering your query in the Library Catalogue box on the search page. To restrict your search to ebooks only, select 'eBooks' from the search filters on the left-hand side of your search results.
Note: you can also search for ebooks using the Discovery service.
We also have a Library Guide on finding and using ebooks.
E-books
Each year the Library purchases more and more electronic books so if you are unable to get hold of a print copy, you can often read an e-book online instead. They are available via a number of
platforms, so e-books don’t all look the same. In order to read e-books, you may need to use software such as Adobe Reader or install a plug-in via your browser.
You can find print books and e-books side by side on the Discovery Service and the library catalogue. You can search for all or part of a title, author, publisher or simply just with subject keywords.
Choose ebooks from the left hand options to just see ebooks in your results list. Click on the title of an e-book to bring up its full catalogue record and then on the online access link to
read the full e-book.
Some e-books can also be downloaded to mobile devices for off-line reading. You might be asked to log in. Full details about logging into e-resources is available in another video and in Library guides. Please ask Library staff for assistance if you have any questions about e-books.
Finding a book in the Library
While more and more Library resources are electronic some resources are not available online and many people prefer to read the printed word.
From the Library search page, you can look for books and eBooks using the
Library catalogue (that's the second search box down). Click 'location University Library' to find only books that are available in print. You can reserve up to 10 books at a time using our click and collect service and Library staff will find them and leave them for you to collect from the reservations collection point.
If you request a book please wait until you receive an email sent to your
University email account telling you that your books are available for you to collect.
If you need your books immediately or just want to browse the shelves and find what else is available on a topic, click the title of the book you want. Shelf Mark number for a book is shown in a grey strip across the middle of its catalogue record and on the 'locate on shelf' floor plan.
Library books are arranged on the shelves by shelf mark number. All the books on a subject will typically have a similar shelf mark number making it easier to find everything on a topic.
Click the 'locate on shelf button' to display a floor plan showing the location you can then look along the shelf to find the shelf mark where the book you want to shelved. Remember you can ask a member of Library staff to help you.
Happy reading!
