Coker, Harry (2019) Is ‘the mega event phenomenon’ having a positive impact on local development?: a case study of the London 2012 Olympic Games. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
The ‘mega event phenomenon’ refers to the increasing intensity of bidding competitions to win the rights to host mega events and the benefits they can provide. Contemporarily, these events have evolved into development strategies used to improve and regenerate a city, providing a legacy long after the event. Through analysing secondary data and research, this thesis seeks to critically examine the impact mega events have on local development. It goes into detail regarding the regeneration of the surrounding areas, the economic legacy and the sporting legacy of London 2012, raising serious questions regarding the exclusion of existing residents in the host boroughs. The findings of this study illustrate that the legacy of London 2012 proves that it is possible for mega events to have a significant impact on local development.
