Abstract

Residents in dar es salaam suffer from immense flooding caused by heavy rain and poor city planning (“Tanzania urban resilience program”, 2018). The world bank has identified these issues and is working with local officials and residents (“Next Generation of Youth”, 2018) to improve and implement changes to the area to prevent flooding in the future. This project aims to breach the gap between concept and visualisation to aid in demonstrating the remediation changes proposed, to eventually gain support from officials and the local residents. To accomplish this aim the project needs to use drone data of the area to create a 3d environment and remediation changes to be used alongside a visual flooding simulation in a real time application. In this context realistic and accurate is determined by the client as being using photogrammetry for the creation of the environment.
Based upon a review of the literature on real time applications, water simulations, and environment generation from drone captured images, unreal engine was chosen to create the application, eulerian description was chosen to simulate the flooding and a 3d model generated using photoscan for the realistic and accurate environment is the most appropriate method to develop for the remediation development. These methods resulted in an realistic and accurate visualisation of the situation in dar es salaam and the proposed remediation changes. It is recommended that eulerian description is used for any large water simulations, however further research into its real time visualisation is required for more effective use.
