Ogunnaike, Damilola (2019) Is there a correlation between social media engagement, dependency and addiction, and symptoms of poor mental health among young adolescents?. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

Teenagers and young adults are constantly adapting to the ever changing landscape of social media, the Internet and technology as a medium, influencing the way in which developers are updating this sites in a bid to keep young people engaged and interested, without putting much emphasis on the negative effects of excessive and prolonged use of their websites. The purpose of this research paper is to explore the relationship between young adolescents and social media, looking at how young people are engaging with the medium of social networks now, in contrast to a decade ago, and whether symptoms of poor mental, emotional and physical health can be attributed to excessive social media engagement or not. The research will also delve into other societal and environmental factors that could potentially have an effect on an adolescent's relationship with the Internet and social media, for example the living conditions within which one may grow up in, class and the form parenting or lack thereof they experience growing up. Relevant and appropriate research methods, such as quantitative and qualitative, will be implemented to produce data that can inform the argument being made and overall research.
