Austin, Declan John (2019) The U.K. Television Licence: should we pay?. (unpublished BEng dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

The United Kingdom (UK) television (TV) licence is a mandatory licence fee collected on behalf of public service broadcasting for the exchange in consumption of live terrestrial TV. Anybody that watches live TV in the UK must pay a licence fee to TV Licensing to gain access to the programmes legally. By taking a critical and analytical approach, this project will explore the methods used to operate the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and how the company gains its funds for the following year. In order to research this topic, a survey is necessary to gather as many members of the British public’s opinions as possible. This will lead on to establish a new funding model that the BBC could implement in order for the company to run smoothly. Finally, this project will be concluded to determine what is the best options for the future of public service broadcasting in this country.
