Merritt, Emily (2019) Are women being treated differently as presenters in studio based news broadcasting on the basis of gender?. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
In recent years, the gender inequality present in the television industry has become more prevalent. A number of organisations and individuals, as well as the government, have worked towards eradicating the gender pay gap and harassment within the workplace; yet the more hidden forms of inequality are still present. This dissertation analyses the ways female news anchors are treated differently to their male co-workers on the basis of appearance, voice and experience. It also reviews the disparities in employment for those considered. By using interviews, statistics and academic literature the study found that women are treated differently within their news anchor roles by being pressured into looking a certain way and by being employed for shorter lengths of time with a lower salary that the males in the same roles.
