Plummer, Jack (2019) An investigation into the role of a technical animator in the games industry. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
A technical animator has a number of responsibilities in the pipeline of video game creation, both inside of the animation software and the target game engine. Their primary goal is to support and provide animators with the rigs and tools they require to perform their jobs efficiently.
This project is an investigation into methods employed by technical animators within the modern games industry. This includes techniques for creating effective character rigs and accompanying tools within the chosen animation software whilst considering the limitations of the target engine.
In addition, animations will be created in order to create a prototype character controller using animation systems present in Unreal Engine 4.
Research will be done primarily using sources from industry professionals, as well as receiving feedback at multiple stages of development from both students and industry riggers and animators.
