Thompson, Jake (2019) What are the ingredients that make a good talk show?. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
Talk shows have been an integral part of the television schedule since its creation. It is one of the most celebrated genres, watched by millions every day. There has been a plethora of talk programs that have appeared on our screens but a significant amount has not been successful, and furthermore the talk show itself has become stale, with every show being a duplication of another. This study explored the ingredients of a talk show: host, guest, and format, which if all mastered have the potential to produce successful talk, analysing their individual importance towards a program, and how evolving each ingredient into something unique and original can improve the quality and longevity of a show and can in aid distinguishing the program from its competitors. This study used an interview with an industry professional and examples of success talk shows as evidence for information on the ingredients. In addition, this study explored if talk podcasting could take over talk television as the primary destination for talk because of its accessibility and how it is returning to the essence of talk. Although talk podcasting is increasing in quality and popularity, at the present talk television will continue to dominate talk, however if traditional television continues to decrease, talk podcasting could take over in the future.
