Green, Joe (2019) The impact of crunch on video game developer’s morale. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

Crunch is something that is very prominent within the Game’s industry today and is something that is often seen as mandatory. This report looks at the impact crunch has on game developer’s morale, by looking at the factors that effect morale. The methodology consists of looking at previous research on the topic of crunch as well as looking at case studies which demonstrate real examples of the implications of crunch. The report will follow Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs in structure, and demonstrate how impactful crunch is on each level of the hierarchy to give an understanding of how impactful crunch can be. The impact of crunch can be quite drastic on developer’s morale which can lead to a whole host of issues, and thus concludes that further research on how to prevent crunch should be done in order to remove this issue from the industry.
