Brockman, John (2019) 3D asset and environment creation for games/real-time: knowledge and skills to work as an environment artist. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

3D Graphics for real-time/games has been a constantly growing field ever since the initial commercial success of 3D vector-based games such as Battlezone in 1980 (Plus, 2010) along with the later games developing this further into the 3D games we have today. In addition to this progress, many different software, tools and techniques along with pipelines have been developed to keep up with the ever-improving graphics that are capable in real-time. This project will investigate the practical implementation of modern game/real-time development pipelines for asset production and attempt to create one or several environments to a standard close to industry standard while developing a greater understanding of the key parts of these pipelines. This will focus predominantly on the tools and software commonly used and the skills associated with them along with looking at the most important aspects of being an environment artist, an industry role which shares a great deal of common ground in terms of what this paper will be investigating.
The environment created in this project will be showcased through screenshots and a fly through.
