Fisher, Myanne (2019) Practical and digital effects: how visual effects are perceived in films. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

Visual effects is the process of creating illusions, it can be subdivided into two categories, practical and digital effects. The progress of visual effects can be tracked through such technological advancements, from the introduction of the camera, throughout the silent era, to the computer advanced 21st century. Most CG papers focus on digital effects and the science behind it, however this paper showcases both practical and digital techniques and provides insight into the relationship between them in the film industry. It also gives a preview into the ingenuity behind visual storytelling in the VFX industry. This comparative research study examines the variety of techniques and technologies, that have developed in response to the demands of the narrative of a film, and the audiences cinematic experience. The culmination of the research will determine the 5 W’s (and a H) after an in-depth analysis of the two effects.
