Gosling, Ross (2019) Photorealism within CGI environments for film: exploring relevant tools and techniques involved. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

This project explores the current tools and techniques that are used extensively by the film industry, in order to develop a photo-realistic 3D environment based on London during the WW2 Blitz bombings. The environment won't be an exact replica of London, but rather inspired by it. A short video demonstrating the environment from different angles and positions will be rendered and should be suitable to include on a personal show reel. The results of this project will demonstrate that it is possible to create high quality, realistic environments without the years of experience, and the assistance of an entire team.
The key goals to achieve in this project are therefore:
● To create a photorealistic environment suitable for film.
● To create an environment that resembles an artistic impression of London during the 1940’ Blitz bombings.
● To gain a basic understanding of some of the processes and techniques that take place during production of an environment within the film industry.
● To gain further knowledge of what working in industry is like.
