Fraser, Safiah (2019) Why does women’s rugby get less broadcasting coverage compared to men’s rugby?. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

A preliminary research and a literature review was carried out to confirm that the impression of women’s rugby receiving less television coverage was true. The research carried out led to developing the research question; why does women’s rugby get less broadcasting coverage compared to men’s rugby?
It appeared the reasons were varied and complex. This led to carrying out further research to understand this subject better. Interactive interviews with women’s rugby players and an industry expert were used for primary research.
Based on a review of the literature it revealed that the reasons for limited coverage of women’s rugby could be considered largely in three areas; societal reasons, sponsorship and broadcasting regulatory issues. Each of these areas were examined in more detail and in the conclusion opportunities for future change is considered.
