Abstract
Twenty-Seventeen saw the first female actor to be cast in the lead role of the hugely popular BBC One science fiction programme Doctor Who, but after almost Fifty-Five years, why has it only just happened? Despite a wealth of information and literature on the topic of Gender Representation and Doctor Who, research on this specifically was lacking, but is valuable from a historical and societal perspective. In order to reach a conclusion, much research has been carried out, including the consultation, by interview, of an academic with publications on the relevant areas being Gender and Doctor Who, as well as seeking the thoughts of those with an in depth understanding of fandom and the effect of social media. The project has ultimately concluded that a multitude of factors, including the advent and increase in popularity of social media, as well as the recent push towards gender inequality society has experienced with what has been defined as Fourth Wave Feminism, contributed to the recent change in the attitudes of executives, and has since resulted in Jodie Whittaker’s casting in the role
