Amamani, Vritika Jacky (2019) Storyliving through immersive technologies. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
This artefact uses immersive technologies such as Virtual Reality (VR) and Motion Capture (MOCAP), also uses different components like contemporary dancing, Visual Effects (VFX) and psychology to tell the story of a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and his mother, how it is difficult for the child to express himself and how the mother struggles to understand him. The purpose of this artefact is to raise Autism awareness and for the society to comprehend what a child with ASD goes through by allowing the user to feel disembodied in the Virtual world and see if with the help of immersive technologies society can empathize and learn more about sensitive topics.
A combination of methodologies will be executed for this project including quantitative, qualitative for research purposes and agile methodology will be used for the development of the artefact. Questionnaires will be conducted to research how much people know about Autism, whether society is willing to learn and if they would be interested in this different approach of raising awareness.
Multiple software packages will be used to build up the artefact including Motion Builder, Houdini and Unreal Engine (UE4). Blueprints will be added in UE4 to set functionalities for the environment and characters, advantages of using UE4 is that the scene is rendered in high quality in real time which is ideal to deliver an immersive experience to the audience.
