Curl, Hannah (2020) Translation and commentary of ‘¿Por Qué Comemos?’ by Luis Escobar. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

The research project presented is a translation and commentary of two chapters that are taken from Dr. Luis Escobar’s book ‘¿Por Qué Comemos?’ which was published in 2010. To be more specific, the two chapters are about recipes relating to a healthy lifestyle and the significance of taking part in sport. The translation is from Spanish into British English, so therefore the aim is to provide an accurate translation for UK citizens or people familiar to this English dialect. The commentary of the translation examines in depth different techniques of translation used and why they have been employed. This includes matters such as the text type, genre, readership, formality features, grammatical changes and culturally specific items (CSIs) which were difficulties encountered when translating and explaining how they were tackled and resolved.
This translation was completed with the help of related texts in the target language in order to see the desired styles written in English relating to these topics. I believe this was a way to create an accurate translation tailored to British English readers.
