Drinkwater, Charlotte (2020) How could Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) be used as a more widespread approach of teaching modern foreign languages in schools in England?: based upon the implementation and success in Spain. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

This research project aims to suggest how Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) could be used to teach Modern Foreign Languages in schools in England. Although CLIL does exist in England, many of the schemes are on a very small scale. Throughout recent years, the number of students taking a GCSE in a language has been steadily decreasing. Despite government efforts to increase standards and uptake, England still lags behind other European countries, such as Spain which has become a pioneering country for CLIL methodology, and where studies have shown success across a variety of subjects. The main finding of this research is that CLIL could be best used to tackle the issue of a lower than anticipated number of students studying towards the English Baccalaureate (Ebacc) by introducing CLIL throughout the education system, with the aim of using it to teach history or geography through a foreign language at GCSE.
