Wilton, Charlotte Pérez (2020) Translation of Juan Gomez-Jurado’s crime fiction Novel ‘Reina Roja’ and a commentary underlining difficulties and strategies. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

This Research Project consists of a translation of the Spanish crime fiction novel ‘Reina Roja’ by Juan Gomez-Jurado, along with a commentary that evaluates the problems that were encountered whilst translating the source text. It demonstrates the translation strategies used to create an appropriate and effective target text through the use of parallel texts and academic journal articles. The most significant issues include the time period, stylistic properties of a literary translation, taboo phrases, culture-specific items and certain idiomatic phrases. This work underlines the importance for translators to develop their knowledge for certain cultural differences, lexical items and styles within the genre.
