Abstract

Interlingual subtitling is becoming ever more relevant as the world shifts towards digital content accessed online. Despite this, there is a vast range of variety between subtitling practices across the globe. This project set out to subtitle the first 2000 words of the Spanish series ‘La Otra Mirada’ into English. This was done according to industry standards, as unstandardized as they are, in order to investigate the challenges facing subtitlers and translation strategies advocated by literature. The project found that the main challenges of Audiovisual translation are the multimodality of the text, a change of mode which necessitates reduction, and the presence of the ST alongside the TT. Strategies advocated by literature are effective, however must be taken on a case by case basis, and the subtitler must choose the most suitable option in the context of the particular decision to be made. The project raises the question of the suitability of guidelines for speed of subtitles according to recent research and calls for further research into this area specifically aimed at interlingual subtitling
