Mullen, Rebecca (2020) Subtitling from Swiss German into English extracts from a news broadcast on the Swiss National Women’s Strike 2019. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

This Research Project’s aim was to subtitle a video in Swiss German from the Swiss regional broadcaster Telebasel. The video is a program about gender equality and women’s rights in Switzerland, which was broadcast in response to the National Women’s Strike which took place in June 2019. This video was chosen because the world of feminist discourse is over saturated with anglophone sources and it was important to offer a different perspective. This project was an opportunity to learn about the conventions of subtitling and the difficulties one can encounter, and how they were overcome in order to provide not only an accurate translation, but a usable one appropriate for the target audience.
In this commentary the process of transcribing the video is discussed and detailed. The video was first transcribed into Standard German, meaning that the Swiss German dialects spoken in the video had to be translated and transcribed into the standard form. The commentary also discusses the process of translating the video into English, as well as the translation difficulties. I focused on Culture Specific Items, as well as the process of condensing and reformulating information in order to adhere to subtitling specifications.
