Ricketts, Molly May (2020) Translation of recipes from Spanish-speaking countries including a commentary highlighting the difficulties and strategies: a reflection on the importance for translators to develop an understanding of the lexical and cultural differences in the source and target cultures. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
In this Research Project the idea of regional dialects and lexical differences will be explored, using the translation process of five recipes from five different Spanish-speaking countries (Mexico, Colombia, Spain, Argentina and Chile). This work evaluates the issues encountered whilst translating the source texts and demonstrates the strategies used to create effective target texts, referring to literature, parallel texts and personal knowledge of each specific country. Translation challenges include; lexical issues, omission, measurement systems and structural difficulties. The study confirms the importance for translators to develop an understanding of these lexical and cultural differences.
