Scowen, Suzanna (2020) Translation of an extract from Manfred Theisen’s Rot oder Blau: du hast die Wahl into English: commentary on translation strategy and translation theory. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

The aim of this research project was to translate Manfred Theisen’s Rot oder Blau: Du hast die Wahl from German into English. A translation commentary is also provided, focused on translation theory, in which seeks to identify which aspects of translating for children and young people have been studied by translation theorists. This not only aided this translation but aims to aid future translations within the genre. While the percentage of translated literary fiction is on the rise in the UK, there is still very little in the way of translated children’s fiction. Books translated from other countries and cultures are an excellent way for children and teenagers to learn and broaden their understanding of the world. Therefore, this research project will look at the most effective way to translate culture-specific items, so that they remain foreign but still easily understandable, for educational purposes, and so as not to over explain to the young reader. Consideration also needed to be given for the narrative voice, for the same reasons. The conclusion is drawn that a translator may wish to use a foreignizing approach when translating for children, so that they are fully exposed to new cultural elements, this is not always possible, without alienating the reader completely.
