Udy, Claire (2019) Who controls the BBC?: examining the relationship between the power elite and the journalistic output of the British Broadcasting Corporation. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), whilst a world-class leader in journalistic output is also argued as being a “mouthpiece for the establishment” (Jones, 2015, p. 118). This dissertation will look at establishment bias within the journalistic output of the BBC as guided by academic critique, a framework from C. Wright Mills's (2000) writings on the power elite and Herman & Chomsky’s (2002) Propaganda Model. With case studies into issues surrounding personalities such as Jimmy Savile and Arthur Scargill, this dissertation will be also looking at specific British historical events and how they were framed by the BBC, using secondary research. This work will then look at radical reforms as presented by media academics in order to fully democratise the BBC before concluding that more work needs to be done in order to counter the establishment bias that is prevalent in a seemingly impartial corporation.
